U.K. Show "Struck Gold" With Susan Boyle

Singer's Rise From Obscurity No Fluke, Judge Says, But She Faces Stiff Competition From 12-Year-Old

(CBS)
After a week where Susan Boyle shot to global stardom with 50 million hits now on YouTube, "Britain's Got Talent" has acknowledged that she has gone from curiosity, to phenomenon.

Now, reports CBS News correspondent Sheila MacVicar, there is new evidence that she is not just a one note wonder. Amanda Holden, a judge on the show, was blown away by Boyles' voice on a recording made a decade ago for a charity event.

"I cannot believe no one's found her. We are so lucky," said Holden. "We were panning for gold and we struck gold."

Boyle is taking the global discussion over her talent - and her looks - with good humor.

"Baby steps," she says, "because I believe in being cautious. We'll see how I do in the competition first of all."

And there is competition. This weekend, 12-year-old Shaheen Jafargholi rocked the judges.

Boyle will be back on stage next month.
